First and foremost, this article is dedicated to the Navitas Organics turmeric latte mix. I’ve seen so much buzz about turmeric lattes recently but haven’t had a chance to try one. That was, until last week. And let me tell you, this frothy, delicious treat did not disappoint. So why is turmeric taking the health world by storm? Because turmeric is an incredible superfood, especially for fighting inflammation and promoting gut health. A few sips into my first turmeric latte I knew I needed to hop on here and share my experience, as well as five benefits of turmeric for gut health.
Anti-Inflammatory
As I mentioned, turmeric is a powerful anti-inflammatory. Or, I should say, Curcumin, the main active ingredient in turmeric, has powerful anti-inflammatory effects. As we know, chronic inflammation is the culprit behind so many health conditions. From heart disease to cognitive diseases and cancer, anything we can do to fight chronic inflammation has the ability to reduce the risk of numerous diseases in the future.
Unfortunately, inflammation is a common symptom for those struggling with gut issues. As turmeric passes through the digestive system, it calms the inflammation commonly found in individuals with IBS, crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, leaky gut, and more. And the inflammation that results from an unhealthy gut is not confined to the digestive system. Rather, inflammation can spread to other bodily systems such as the nervous system and skeletal system. Fortunately, turmeric is beneficial for fighting inflammation in all areas of the body.
Aids Digestion
Curcumin has the unique ability to relax the walls of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and gently push food and waste through the intestines. Turmeric also helps to prevent bloating and discomfort that originate from the digestive process.
Supports a Healthy Microbiome
Curcumin encourages the regeneration and healing of the colon and intestines when pathogenic bacteria (the “bad bugs”) or leaky gut are present. A healthy, balanced GI tract and microbiome are essential to the health of the gut. So, if you suspect your microbiome may be out of balance, consider adding turmeric to your diet to balance the gut flora.
Supports Detoxification and Liver Health
If waste and harmful compounds are not properly eliminated from our body, they can lead to the buildup of harmful bacteria. This in turn creates an imbalance in our microbiome and threatens the health of our gut. Fortunately, the liver is a powerful component of our body’s elimination and detoxification process. Turmeric supports liver health and the overall health of our bodies by increasing the production of liver bile. It also draws bad cholesterol into the liver for transfer to the colon. So, if you are looking for ways to improve the health of your liver or promote healthy detoxification, consider incorporating more turmeric into your diet.
Bonus: Great Source of Antioxidants
Not only is Curcumin a powerful anti-inflammatory. It’s also a very strong antioxidant. Oxidative damage, like inflammation, is believed to be the culprit behind many diseases. Oxidative damage occurs due to the presence of free radicals in the body. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules that are known to react with protein, fatty acids, as well as our DNA. Antioxidants are an important part of a healthy diet as they neutralize the free radicals, potentially reducing the risk of disease.
How to Add More Turmeric to you Diet
Turmeric is a spice used primarily in Indian cuisine. However, it can be used in a variety of recipes. Personally, I like to use it in soups, for roasting veggies or as a seasoning to chicken. In order to get the medicinal benefits of turmeric you’ll need to consume turmeric on a consistent basis. The easiest way to do so is in supplement form. Fortunately, turmeric supplements are widely available and there are a lot of options on the market. Look for one with at least 1,500 mg of Turmeric Curcumin per serving. Some companies have also started adding ginger to their supplements to aid in the body’s digestion of the supplement.
Say Hello to the Turmeric Latte
Back to the reason behind the article! As I shared in the intro, Navitas Organics makes this incredible turmeric latte powder. Complete with other powerful superfoods such as MCT oil and coconut, this mix is so creamy, frothy and has just the right amount of sweetness. I made my latte with a single serving of the latte powder and then did a 50/50 ration of hot water and almond milk. I used my handheld milk frother to mix it up and after taking my first sip, I literally couldn’t put it down! My beloved matcha lattes officially have some competition.
Parting Words
Turmeric has taken the health and wellness space by storm, and for good reason! Turmeric is the ultimate “food as medicine” superfood and it absolutely deserves a spot in your diet and your wellness routine. And, if you try the Navitas Organics latte mixture, let me know! I’ll be curious to know if others are as starstruck as I am.
